What is Nia?
Based on moving in “Your Body’s Way” Nia supports each individual to move at the intensity level that is right for him or her. A variety of speeds, styles, and ranges of motion are included to support each student in moving toward increased ease, pleasure and balance.
Nia recognizes that bodies are designed to move, and when we move in ways that promote pleasure, we feel better!
Nia combines technical precision and free-form expression, conditioning the body and the nervous system by developing awareness of five primary sensations: flexibility, strength, mobility, agility and stability. Moving in harmony, leads to a state Nia calls Dynamic Ease.
Developed more than twenty five years ago by Debbie and Carlos Rosas, Nia blends aspects of three movement traditions and nine movement forms:
Martial Arts: T’ai Chi, Tai Kwon Do, Aikido
Dance Arts: Jazz Dance, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance
Healing Movement Arts: Yoga, Alexander Technique, The Work of M. Feldenkrais®
